Information, knowledge, the exact right diet, a fully optimized and science-backed strength training progression… if these were what it took to achieve and maintain perfect health, we’d all be in the best shape of our lives.
We live in an age of information abundance, and yet chronic disease, obesity, and ill-health are at epidemic proportions. Clearly, achieving and maintaining good health is about more than just knowing what to do…
One of the biggest barriers to turning knowledge into progress is adapting that knowledge and information into clear, small, actionable steps that actually fit into your life.
These steps are sequential and strategic on the way to achieving your goals and your own unique version of health and wellness.
This is what the health coaching process is designed to help you do.
An example that I like to give is that a health coach is like a hiking guide & instructor - not a sherpa.
The guide helps you understand the terrain you are going to traverse, orient you when lost, work with you to avoid the worst river crossings, and help you build the skills to become a more experienced backpacker.
The health coach is not your sherpa; a health coach can’t carry your pack or make your meals.
And like any good guide, the health coach has a map and a general idea of the routes that are traversable. However, the coach will work with you to figure out the specifics of the route and how it fits into your actual, real, messy, human life.
I didn’t have a health coach for most of my health journey… but I wish I had. I have one now, and I find it incredibly empowering. Just yesterday, I recognized I had almost reached an elusive goal that I set a year ago without even really trying very hard.
I have also seen my own health coaching clients make extraordinary progress toward the goals they set for their lives.
