This week on our nature trail through mechanotransduction, we're diving into something that completely shifted how I think about movement: how movement literally talks to your DNA.
Here's what blew my mind—and what I wish I'd known during my recovery:
Movement is a conversation with your cells
Every time you move, you're not just working muscles. You're sending biochemical signals deep into your cells that flip genetic switches, telling your body which genes to turn on and which to dial down.
Your DNA doesn't change—you inherit that from your parents. But sitting on top of your DNA is something called the epigenome—little tags that tell your DNA how to behave and create proteins.
And here's the game-changer: these tags respond to movement.
The research that changed everything for me
Studies show you can make small changes to your epigenome within a single workout. But it also accumulates over time with consistency.
This completely flipped my perspective from viewing movement as something that "breaks you down or wears you down" to something that literally builds you up—at the cellular level.
Why this matters for your recovery
If you're recovering from injury or illness, this is huge. Your DNA evolutionarily evolved with movement and expects those signals. Without them, it doesn't function as well as it could.
The beauty is in showing up consistently—doing a little bit, sending those signals, doing a little bit more. It really does aggregate over time, and you get stronger and more capable.
The challenge? Finding that line between too much and too little. That's where I help people navigate what works for their own bodies.
